CELSI Frontiers Seminar: Introduction to Agent-Based Modelling in Social Sciences

Dec. 6, 2026

At the latest CELSI Frontiers Seminar, Jakub Barszcz led a methodological session introducing the foundations of agent-based modelling (ABM) and its applications in social science research.

The seminar provided an overview of how agent-based models help researchers understand how the behaviour, decisions, and interactions of individual actors—such as workers, firms, institutions, or households—combine to produce complex and often unexpected systemic outcomes.

In a world shaped by multiple overlapping crises, the session highlighted why understanding these micro-to-macro dynamics is increasingly important.

Through concrete examples and practical insights, Jakub discussed key considerations in model design and implementation, showing how agent-based modelling can be used to explore complex phenomena at the core of labour markets, social policy, and institutional change.

The seminar offered a valuable methodological exchange and sparked discussion on the potential of agent-based approaches to complement existing quantitative and qualitative methods in CELSI’s research.

Many thanks to Jakub Barszcz for an engaging and insightful seminar, and to all participants for the lively discussion.
